5 Business Valuation Methods Explained
Revenue Multiple
Value = Annual Revenue × Industry Multiple. Simple and quick. Best for high-growth companies that aren't yet profitable. Multiple depends on sector, growth rate and market size.
EBITDA Multiple
Value = EBITDA × Industry Multiple. Most used for profitable businesses. Removes accounting noise (depreciation, interest). Typical range: 4–15x for Indian SMEs.
DCF Analysis
Discounts projected future cash flows back to present value. Most theoretically rigorous. Sensitive to assumptions about growth rate and discount rate. Best for stable, predictable businesses.
Asset-Based
Value = Total Assets − Total Liabilities. Floor valuation — what you'd get winding down. Best for asset-heavy businesses like manufacturing, real estate. Ignores earning potential.
PE Multiple
Value = Net Profit × P/E Multiple. Familiar to investors and acquirers. Based on comparable listed company multiples discounted 30-50% for private company illiquidity premium.
