❓ Frequently Asked Questions — Income Tax Refund

How is income tax refund calculated?+
Tax Refund = Total TDS Deducted + Advance Tax Paid − Actual Tax Liability. If total taxes paid exceed actual liability, the excess is refunded by the Income Tax Department after you file your ITR and it is processed.
How long does income tax refund take in India?+
Income tax refund is typically credited within 2–4 weeks of e-filing and e-verification, provided your bank account is pre-validated on the IT portal and there are no mismatches. Complex cases or scrutiny can take 2–3 months. Track status at incometax.gov.in under My Account → Refund/Demand Status.
What is Form 26AS and how does it help claim refund?+
Form 26AS is your annual consolidated tax statement showing all TDS deducted on your PAN by your employer, banks, tenants and others. It also shows advance tax paid. Before filing ITR, verify that your TDS entries match Form 26AS — any mismatch can delay your refund or trigger a notice.
Can I get a refund without filing ITR?+
No. Filing ITR is the only way to claim an income tax refund. There is no alternative process. You must file by July 31 (non-audit cases) to avoid late filing fee. Even if you miss the deadline, you can file a belated return until December 31 of the assessment year and still claim the refund, though interest on refund may be reduced.
What is Section 87A rebate?+
Section 87A gives a rebate equal to actual tax payable (maximum ₹25,000) if taxable income does not exceed ₹12 lakh under the new regime, making effective tax nil for income up to ₹12L. Under the old regime, 87A rebate is ₹12,500 for income up to ₹5 lakh.
My refund is not received — what should I do?+
Check refund status at incometax.gov.in. Common reasons for non-receipt: bank account not pre-validated, name mismatch with PAN, ITR not e-verified within 30 days, pending tax demand, or ITR under processing. Call CPC helpline 1800-103-4455 if refund is not received 3 months after filing.
