❓ GST Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is India's unified indirect tax introduced on 1 July 2017. It replaced VAT, service tax, excise duty, and octroi. GST has 4 main rates: 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. Essential items like food grains, health services, and education are exempt or at 0%. India collects GST using a dual structure — CGST (Central) and SGST (State) for sales within a state, and IGST for inter-state sales.
To add GST (exclusive): GST Amount = Original Price × GST% ÷ 100. Final Price = Original + GST. Example: ₹1000 + 18% GST = GST of ₹180, Final = ₹1180. To remove GST (inclusive): Original = Total × 100 ÷ (100 + GST%). Example: ₹1180 with 18% GST → Original = ₹1180 × 100÷118 = ₹1000.
CGST (Central Goods and Services Tax) is the portion of GST collected by the Central Government. SGST (State Goods and Services Tax) is the portion collected by the State Government. Both are applied on intra-state (within the same state) transactions. Each is exactly half the total GST rate. For 18% GST: CGST = 9%, SGST = 9%. For inter-state sales, IGST (18%) replaces both.
18% GST applies to: most software and IT services, telecom services, restaurants (non-AC), financial services, insurance premiums, hair oil, soaps, toothpaste, packaged food like pasta and cornflakes, cameras, speakers, electronic appliances, and capital goods. This is the largest GST slab covering the majority of goods and services.
GST on ₹1000 depends on the applicable rate: At 5% → GST = ₹50, Total = ₹1050. At 12% → GST = ₹120, Total = ₹1120. At 18% → GST = ₹180, Total = ₹1180. At 28% → GST = ₹280, Total = ₹1280. Use the calculator above to compute GST for any amount and rate instantly.
GST registration is mandatory for businesses with annual turnover above: ₹40 lakhs for goods suppliers (₹20 lakhs for service providers); ₹20 lakhs in most states; ₹10 lakhs in special category states (Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh). All e-commerce sellers must register regardless of turnover.
